How to Measure Your Dog

To ensure your dog's custom Wuvra knee brace fits perfectly, you'll need to take eight simple measurements from the hip to the paw on the injured leg. Each point helps us build a brace that's precise, balanced, and comfortable — matching your dog's natural anatomy.

Before You Begin

  • Have your dog standing upright on all fours in a relaxed position.
  • Use a soft, flexible measuring tape (not metal).
  • Keep the tape flat and level — never twisted or angled.
  • Record all measurements in centimetres (cm).
  • It helps to have a second person assist, especially for active dogs.

Important

Follow the steps below (A–G) carefully, referring to the image for visual placement.

If you're unsure at any point, our team can arrange a video call to guide you through the process.

Accurate measurements ensure the best fit — and the happiest walks ahead.

A: Thigh Circumference Measurement
(Upper Leg)

Measure around the thickest part of your dog’s upper leg (thigh). Keep the tape flat and snug, not tight.

Anatomical diagram of a dog's hind leg with labeled muscles and bones on a white background.

A Section: How to measure correctly

Locate the area on your dog’s injured hind leg where the thigh muscle (quadriceps group) appears fullest or thickest.

Wrap a flexible measuring tape around this point, ensuring it remains flat, level, and perpendicular to the leg’s long axis (avoid angling the tape).

The tape should be snug and compressive — you should wrap the tape around the thigh pushing the fur away ensuring the tape is tight against your dogs thigh however it shouldn't be too tight that you're pinching the skin together.

All measurements should be taken while your dog is standing in a natural weight-bearing position, with the limb extended normally.

B: Knee Circumference (Stifle Joint / Patellar Region)

Measure around the middle of the knee joint where it bends. Tape should sit flat across the back of the joint.

B Section: How to measure correctly

Gently feel your dog’s knee joint and locate the two small bumps, the top one is the patellar) with a soft dip in between (patellar groove).

This dip is your measuring point.

Wrap the measuring tape around the knee, keeping it flat and level so it crosses the back of the joint (stifle crease) evenly.

The tape should be tight, but not tight enough to pinch skin

Keep your dog standing and refer to the image for visual guidance on where the tape should rest.

C: Lower Leg Circumference (Ankle / Hock Region)

Measure 1 cm above the ankle bump at the back of your dog’s leg. Keep the tape level and straight.

C Section: How to measure correctly

Locate your dog’s ankle joint (hock or tarsus) by feeling for the bony bump at the back of the leg. Once you've found this location take your hand immediately above the ankle and feel for the tendon (the hard ridged part). Feel for the thinnest part of this tendon which will be approximately 1cm above the ankle.

Place the measuring tape at this point, wrapping it evenly around the leg.

Keep the tape flat, level, and tight, ensuring it does not twist or sit at an angle.

Your dog should remain standing naturally while you take this measurement for the most accurate reading.

Refer to the image for visual placement above the hock joint.

D: Paw Circumference (Top of Paw)

Measure around the top of the paw where it narrows before the toes. Keep the tape flat and even.

D Section: How to measure correctly

At the top of your dog’s paw, feel where the leg slightly narrows before the toes begin (metacarpal or metatarsal junction).

Place the measuring tape around this indented area and wrap it evenly around the paw.

Keep the tape flat, level, and tight, following the same principle as your previous measurements.

Ensure your dog’s paw is resting naturally on the ground during this measurement for consistency.

E: Thigh Length in cm

Measure from the top of the thigh (where the leg meets the body) down to the centre of the knee joint.

Anatomical diagram of a dog's hind leg with labeled muscles and bones on a white background.

E Section: How to measure correctly

Find the front edge of your dog’s upper thigh, right where the leg connects to the body.

You can usually feel this spot as the location where your dogs thigh touches their abdomen. Its the area where there is generally some loose skin and just by your dogs groin. It’s where the leg naturally begins to move when your dog takes a step.

From this point, measure straight down the front of the leg to the centre of the knee joint (stifle) — the same point used for your B measurement.

Keep the tape flat along the leg, following its natural line without curving around the sides.

Take this measurement while your dog is standing.

F: Calf Length in cm

Measure down the front of the leg from the centre of the knee joint to the small dip above the ankle.

Anatomical diagram of a dog's hind leg with labeled muscles and bones on a white background.

F Section: How to measure correctly

Starting from the centre of the knee joint (stifle) — the same point used for your B measurement — measure straight down the front of your dog’s leg toward the ankle joint (hock or tarsus).

You’ll notice a small indentation on the front of the ankle area, the area where your dogs ankle contracts (cranial aspect of the hock) — this is your end point.

Keep the measuring tape flat along the front of the leg, following its natural shape without wrapping it around.

Take this measurement while your dog is standing naturally

G: Foot Length in cm

Measure from the dip above the ankle down to the same spot on top of the paw used in D.

Anatomical diagram of a dog's hind leg with labeled muscles and bones on a white background.

G Section: How to measure correctly

Starting from the indentation above the ankle joint (hock or tarsus) — the same point used for your F measurement — measure straight down the front of the leg to the top of the paw (metatarsal junction), the same spot used for your D measurement.

Keep the tape flat and straight, following the natural line of your dog’s leg without wrapping or angling it.

Your dog should be standing to maintain natural alignment while you take this reading.
